Common issues

• Hose fabric/lining degradation (dry rot, UV damage) from prolonged storage or weather exposure
• Coupling corrosion or thread damage preventing proper connection to hydrants or nozzles
• Internal lining delamination or cracking causing leaks under pressure
• Mildew growth in hoses stowed wet
• Physical damage (cuts, abrasion) from careless deployment or storage
• Gasket/washer deterioration at couplings causing leaks

Inspection checklist

• Visual inspection for external damage, abrasion and UV degradation
• Pressure test at rated working pressure per the manufacturer/flag requirement
• Check coupling threads and gaskets for damage, corrosion, correct fit to hydrants and nozzles
• Confirm the hose is correctly rolled/stowed and readily accessible
• Check hose length and marking against the fire control plan
• Verify hose reel or rack mechanism operates freely where fitted

Critical spares

• Complete replacement hose (correct length/diameter per the fire control plan)
• Coupling gaskets/washers
• Hose couplings, where not integral/swaged

Safety

• A hose that bursts under pressure during a real fire is a life-safety failure - pressure testing is not optional
• Hoses stowed wet or found damaged should be removed from service immediately, not left for the next drill
• Coupling thread compatibility with shore connections and the international shore connection must be verified

Class survey

Fire hoses are checked at each fire safety/annual survey against the fire control plan for correct number, length, location and condition; class expects evidence of the required pressure test and replacement of hoses that fail or exceed the manufacturer's stated service life.
