Common issues
- Adhesion loss at the sealant-to-substrate interface, especially on poorly prepared or oil-contaminated steel/aluminium
- Skinning-over or incomplete cure in low-temperature or high-humidity application conditions
- Cracking or splitting at expansion/movement joints subjected to more movement than the product's rated elongation
- UV-related chalking and hardening on weather-exposed applications
- Softening or staining where an incompatible topcoat has been applied over the sealant
- Premature joint failure where backing rod or bond-breaker tape was omitted, causing three-sided adhesion
- Blistering from moisture trapped beneath the sealant on damp substrates
Inspection checklist
- Visual check for cracking, splitting or debonding along seam and joint lines
- Confirm the sealant still accommodates joint movement without visible tearing at corners
- Spot pick-test adhesion at a few representative locations
- Check for active water ingress behind sealed joints (deckhouse penetrations, tank tops)
- Verify compatibility of any overcoat applied since original installation
- Check for chalking, discolouration or hardening indicating UV/weathering degradation
- Review DNV MED certificate (MEDB0000AXV) validity and batch traceability of material carried on board

Safety
- Solvent/isocyanate vapours during application - forced ventilation required, especially in enclosed spaces
- Skin and eye irritation from uncured resin and hardener components - PPE per SDS
- Slip hazard from uncured or partially cured sealant on walkways
- Confined space precautions when resealing tank or void penetrations

Surveys check that the as-fitted material matches the approved type, that the certificate remains valid, and that fire-relevant surface materials have not been overcoated with an unapproved, non-compliant product.
