W-310

Hatlapa W-310 is a 2-stage water-cooled high-pressure starting air compressor by Hatlapa Marine GmbH (Uetersen, founded 1919). In contrast to Sauer (air-cooled), Hatlapa is water-cooled — advantage: compact engine room installation without ventilation requirements, disadvantage: seawater corrosion in coolers. V-arrangement with 2 cylinders, direct-coupled electric motor (no V-belt). Delivers 310 m³/h FAD at 30 bar — 3x more than Sauer WP 101 L. Standard equipment on larger vessels (VLCC, Capesize, large container ships) where higher starting air volumes are required. Class-certified (DNV, LR, ABS, BV, NK). In current design since 1985.

Common failures & inspection points

Valve plate breakage at 6,000-10,000h, especially after prolonged high-load operation
Cooling water flow restriction due to scale formation in intercooler after 2-3 years without descaling
Crankshaft seal leakage after 12,000-15,000h identifiable by oil loss at coupling end
Suction filter blockage in dusty engine rooms — if not replaced every 1,000h, pressure drop in 1st stage
Cooler tube corrosion after 8-10 years with aggressive seawater without anode maintenance

Service & Maintenance

Main intervals: valve plates inspection every 4,000h, replacement at 8,000h. Piston rings 12,000-16,000h. Bearings 25,000h. Intercooler descaling every 2 years. Daily: cooling water flow, discharge air temperature, oil level, condensate drainage. Weekly: vibration check, safety valve function test.
