Common issues
- Mechanical seal leakage from dry running or shaft misalignment
- Bearing wear or failure from incorrect grease quantity or misalignment
- Impeller and wear ring erosion from cavitation or sand/silt in raw seawater
- Casing and impeller corrosion/erosion on cast iron wetted parts in seawater service
- Coupling misalignment causing vibration and premature seal or bearing wear
- Reduced flow from marine growth or debris fouling the suction strainer or sea chest
- Shaft sleeve wear at the mechanical seal running face
- Corrosion of fasteners and studs exposed to seawater splash
Inspection checklist
- Check mechanical seal for weeping or leakage
- Measure bearing temperature and vibration during running
- Check coupling alignment
- Inspect strainer/sea chest for fouling and clean as needed
- Verify discharge pressure and flow against the pump curve
- Inspect wear ring and impeller clearance when the pump is opened
- Check foundation bolts and grouting for looseness
- Verify motor insulation resistance
- Inspect casing and pedestal for external corrosion
- Listen for abnormal noise indicating cavitation at suction

Safety
- Isolate and lock out the electrical supply before opening the casing
- Residual pressure or hydrostatic head in the seawater system before opening the pump
- Heavy cast components - use proper lifting gear when removing casing or impeller
- Hot bearing housings after prolonged running
Class survey
Cooling water pumps in main engine or auxiliary cooling service are typically covered under a Continuous Survey Machinery scheme where fitted, or examined at Special Survey/renewal otherwise. Class looks for overhaul records, availability of impeller/seal/bearing spares, and satisfactory changeover of the standby pump.
