Common issues
- Moisture pickup in flux or electrode coating leading to porosity or hydrogen-induced cracking if storage/baking procedures are not followed
- Incorrect consumable selection or mismatch to the base metal, particularly for 9% Ni cryogenic steel where filler must match the parent material properties
- Inadequate preheat or interpass temperature control for the joint leading to cracking
- Storage beyond shelf life or in uncontrolled/humid conditions degrading flux or coating performance
- Batch/heat certificate not matching the approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) in use
Inspection checklist
- Verify consumable batch/heat certificates match the approved WPS before use
- Check storage conditions (heated, dry cabinet, humidity control) against the manufacturer's requirement
- Confirm baking/redrying procedure has been followed for flux exposed to atmosphere
- Verify the consumable classification matches the base material or dissimilar-joint requirement per the WPS
- Check the shelf-life/expiry date on the packaging before issue
- Confirm the welder's qualification covers this consumable/process combination

Safety
- Welding fume exposure from nickel-alloy consumables requires proper fume extraction and PPE per applicable occupational exposure guidance
- Hot work permit and fire watch requirements apply, particularly in way of tanks or confined spaces
- Preheat equipment presents burn hazards
- Tank gas-freeing/inerting status must be verified before hot work on or near cryogenic (e.g. 9% Ni) tank structure
Class survey
Welding consumable batch records and welder/procedure qualifications are checked by class surveyors during hull or tank repair work involving 9% Ni or nickel-alloy joints; consumable certificates (matching heat/batch numbers) must be presented and traceable to the approved WPS for any class-witnessed repair.
