Dynamic Positioning by Kongsberg Maritime AS is a dynamic-positioning control system for automatically maintaining vessel position and heading using available propellers, thrusters and rudders. It is installed at bridge or DP operator stations and interfaces with position-reference systems, motion and heading sensors, wind sensors, propulsion controls and the vessel power plant. The controller continuously calculates the thrust required to counter environmental forces and vessel motion. The system combines vessel-motion control with position-reference, heading, wind and propulsion information to maintain a commanded position or track. Safe DP operation depends as much on sensor validity, power-system availability and thruster readiness as on the controller itself. The approved redundancy, consequence analysis and operational limits are vessel-specific and must be taken from the DP documentation and class notation.
