The rotor, whose length is 3 m, has an average diameter of 0.5 m and is driven hydraulically; maximum speed is 380 rpm. It is arranged to have its greatest effect at ship-speeds up to 5 knots, and is automatically switched off at 10 knots (or at a corresponding propeller-pitch; maximum rudder angle is 68 deg. (to each side) when the rotor is operating, and is reduced to 35 deg. when the rotor is switched off. The Author, of the Jastram company, Hamburg, explains in detail how the rotor enables the rudder to be effective at large angle's of helm (lift increases up to angles of about 50 or 60 deg., after which it gradually decreases), and so assists manoeuvring at low speeds. The influence of the inflow velocity to the propeller and rudder is also discussed. The results of turning-cricle tests on the Rheinfels, one of the four ships, are presented and examined for turns both with the without the rotor in operation. Results of other manoeuvres, including the use of the rotor in combination with the ship's twin bow-thrusters, are also discussed. These results, together with subsequent service experience, show the excellent capabilities of the rotor, particularly at the higher propeller-loadings. The turning-circle diameter is reduced to a ship-length, and the combination of bow-thrusters and rotor-rudder enables the ship to move sideways at 2 knots while moving ahead at 1 to 2 knots., Some further capabilities of the rotor-rudder are mentioned.
