Visually inspect mechanical seal housing for salt deposits, corrosion staining, and weeping. Check seal face condition (should be smooth, not pitted). Monitor discharge flow - sudden reduction indicates seal failure. For magnetic coupling pumps, verify magnet alignment is centered.

For cast iron models, examine casing exterior and interior (via drain plugs/inspection ports) for soft, crumbling texture or cavitation marks. For marine service, confirm stainless steel (316L preferred) or bronze/Duplex alloy construction. Tap-test casing - hollow/dull sound indicates internal corrosion.

Manually flood bilge/sump with dock hose to at least 3 inches and verify pump starts automatically. Confirm float switch arm moves freely (not stuck by salt deposits). Check electrical contacts for corrosion using multimeter (continuity test). Verify pump shuts off when water level drops.

Listen for characteristic grinding/chattering noise during operation (indicates cavitation). Inspect impeller/turbine through sight glass (if equipped) for erosion pitting or blade damage. Check suction line integrity - confirm no air leaks at hose couplings, clamps, or pipe threads. Verify suction lift is within pump specification (typically 6-8 feet max for self-priming).

Inspect inlet strainer basket (remove and clean) - should show minimal accumulated silt, salt crystals, or organic growth. Check discharge pressure gauge for abnormal drop (indicates blockage). For seawater systems, perform monthly strainer cleaning. Verify seacock is fully open and hose is clear of kinks or damage.
