Common failures & inspection points
Use infrared thermometer to measure bearing temperature. Normal operating temperature should not exceed 10-15°C above ambient. Overheating indicates wear, misalignment, or insufficient lubrication. Measure baseline regularly and monitor for increases.
Inspect gland packing or mechanical seal for visible weeping/dripping (acceptable <5 drops/minute). Check pressure at seal cavity. Replace mechanical seal if leakage exceeds acceptable limits or if visual inspection shows seal face wear, scoring, or deposits. Verify seal installation orientation correct.
Use vibration meter to monitor pump vibration during operation. Record baseline at commissioning. Alert if vibration increases 25% from baseline in any axis. Imminent failure indicated by 50% increase. Compare against manufacturer specifications. High vibration can cause catastrophic bearing failure.
Inspect impeller blade surfaces for erosion pitting, corrosion deposits, or material loss especially on suction side. Check for calcium/salt deposits buildup indicating seawater circulation. Ensure material compatibility with cooling medium (FW vs SW). Replace impeller if erosion >2mm depth observed.
Monitor pressure at pump inlet (suction side). Ensure suction pressure remains above 0.3 bar absolute. Listen for characteristic noise signature (machine-gun-like sound). Check inlet filter/strainer condition - clean or replace if pressure drop >0.5 bar. Verify inlet line diameter adequate and free of restrictions.
