Common issues
- Magnetron/transceiver output power degradation over time, reducing detection range
- Antenna motor or rotation bearing wear causing scan speed irregularity or noise
- Waveguide or radome moisture ingress causing performance loss or arcing
- Display unit dimming or intermittent faults with unit age
- Radar-to-radar or radar-to-VHF/AIS interference
- Loose or corroded antenna unit cabling/connectors at the mast
Inspection checklist
- Performance monitor / power output check where fitted
- Visual inspection of antenna unit, radome and waveguide connections for corrosion or water ingress
- Check azimuth/bearing accuracy against a known reference target or gyro input
- Confirm ARPA/target tracking and alarm functions operate correctly
- Check interswitch and network integration with ECDIS/bridge systems where fitted
- Inspect antenna motor gearbox and bearings for wear or noise
- Verify heading and position sensor inputs are correctly aligned
- Check display for image quality, range ring accuracy and tuning

Safety
- Microwave radiation exposure near the scanner - do not stand in front of the antenna while transmitting
- High voltage present inside transceiver/display units - only qualified radio/radar technicians should open these
- Rotating antenna hazard - lock out rotation before working near the scanner unit

Radar is SOLAS-mandated navigation equipment. Surveys check valid performance test records, correct configuration for vessel type/tonnage, and integration with other bridge navigation equipment; surveyors typically request evidence of the annual radar performance check rather than performing a full technical test themselves.
