Common issues

• Radome mounting bracket or bolts loosening from vibration over time
• Water ingress at the radome seal/gasket leading to internal condensation
• RF/data cable connector corrosion at the deck penetration
• False or ghost echoes from nearby metal structures, rigging, or radar interference
• Doppler target-trail colouring misread by inexperienced watchkeepers as a collision-avoidance solution rather than a trend indicator
• Firmware not kept current, causing display/chartplotter interface glitches
• Pedestal scan noise or intermittent rotation from bearing wear

Inspection checklist

• Radome mounting bracket and fasteners for corrosion/looseness
• Radome shell for UV degradation, cracking, or impact damage
• Cable gland and connector for corrosion or moisture ingress
• Power supply voltage at the unit against the maker's rated range
• Built-in self-test (BITE) result reviewed at start-up
• Doppler/trails function checked against a known moving target
• Firmware/software version checked against the latest release
• Heading line and bearing accuracy checked against a known reference (e.g. a charted object)

Class survey

This is typically a leisure/workboat-grade radar and is not generally marketed with SOLAS/IMO type approval (wheelmark) for carriage-compliant navigation radar on classed commercial vessels - confirm type-approval status separately if carriage compliance is required. Where fitted as non-mandatory equipment, class interest is usually limited to power supply integration and a general operability check at survey.

Estimated lifetime: Solid-state marine radar transceivers of this class are typically expected to give around 8-10 years of reliable service under normal marine exposure, with actual life depending on installation environment - confirm against the maker's warranty and service documentation.
