Common issues

• Lamp or bulb failure with a noticeable drop in beam intensity before total loss
• Elevation/train drive motor stiffening or seizing from salt exposure and lack of use
• Corrosion of the housing, yoke and mounting base in the weather
• Front glass or lens fogging, pitting, or cracking from UV and thermal cycling
• Slip ring / brush contact wear causing intermittent power or erratic beam
• Power cable chafing or gland failure at the deck or mast penetration
• Door or lamp-access seal deterioration allowing water ingress into the housing

Inspection checklist

• Check lamp housing door seal and gasket condition
• Verify elevation and training motion is smooth over full range, no binding
• Check base mount and yoke for corrosion or loose fasteners
• Inspect power cable and gland at the mast/deck penetration for chafing or cracking
• Check beam focus/alignment and confirm the reflector is clean and undamaged
• Inspect front glass for cracks, fogging or delamination
• Test remote control (bridge panel) operation including train/elevation limits
• Check slip ring and brush contacts for wear or pitting
• Confirm supply breaker, fuse rating and earth continuity at the distribution panel

Safety

• Lamp housing and lens are hot to the touch during and shortly after operation
• Electric shock risk when servicing with mains supply live - isolate at the breaker first
• Pinch/crush hazard from the powered elevation and training mechanism
• Work is frequently done aloft on a mast or bridge wing - use fall protection

Class survey

Searchlights are normally checked as part of the vessel's navigation/signalling equipment during periodical safety surveys for correct operation, mounting and remote control from the bridge, rather than as a continuous survey machinery item.
